Die Fotografien von Valérie Leray sind künstlerischer Ausdruck der Rückkehr an „Erinnerungsorte“ – das Vergangene wird gegenwärtig, bleibt aber unsichtbar. In der Serie In the making sucht die Künstlerin Orte auf, die die Macht der Stasi bezeugen:  das ehemalige Ministerium in der Normannenstraße und die Haftanstalt in der Genslerstraße, die zur Zeit der DDR in Stadtplänen nicht aufgeführt und terra incognita waren. In diesen Gebäuden, als Museumsraum gestaltet und praktisch unverändert belassen, werden heute Führungen durch ehemalige Häftlinge angeboten, die dem Besucher ein möglichst authentisches Bild vermitteln sollen. Lerays Anordnung des Mobiliars und die Wahl des Kamerawinkels machen eine menschliche Anwesenheit fühlbar. Kargheit und reduzierte Farbpalette der Räume, ebenso wie andere Zeugnisse gelebter Geschichte, regten sie dazu an, mit Überschneidungen von Formen spielerisch umzugehen und deren geometrisch-abstrakte Eigenschaften zu betonen. Die vorhandenen Dinge sind gleichzeitig Spuren der Vergangenheit wie auch Allegorien, Symbole, Inspiration für Fiktion.

Valerie Leray’s pictures imply a return to the “realms of memory” regarded as expressions of the artistic gesture, showing in the present time what used to be but which remains invisible. In her series In the making, the artist looks for the testimony of places where the Stasi exerted its power: the former ministry in Normannenstrasse and the former main remand center in Genslerstrasse – once unidentifiable on a map and called terra incognita. These places, today museographied but almost in their original condition, these memorials are visited under the guidance of formers prisoners so as to offer the public their utmost genuineness. The layout of the furniture and the choice of the shooting angles make a human presence palpable. Their minimalistic aspect and the limited palette – as many hints of a real-life history – have led her to play with overlapping shapes, and to emphasize their geometric and abstract properties. Today’s objects are both tracks of the past and allegories, symbols or sources of fiction.

Les photographies de Valérie Leray impliquent le retour sur les lieux, envisagés comme théâtres post-événementiel du geste artistique, en rendant présent ce qui fut, mais qui demeure invisible. Dans la série A l'état latent, l’artiste recherche le témoignage des lieux de pouvoir de la STASI à Berlin - L’ex- ministère de la Normannenstraße et l’ex-maison d’arrêt centrale de la Genslerstraße - autrefois non identifiés sur les cartes et désignés « terra incognita ». Aujourd'hui muséographiés, laissés pratiquement en l’état, ces lieux de mémoire font l’objet de visites guidées effectuées par d’anciens prisonniers, afin d’en restituer au public l’image la plus authentique. La modification de la place du mobilier, le choix des angles de prises de vues, rendent ainsi  palpable une présence humaine. Son aspect minimaliste ainsi que sa palette de couleurs réduites – qui sont autant d’indices de l’histoire vécue – l’ont conduite à jouer sur des imbrications de formes et à accentuer leurs propriétés géométriques et abstraites. Les objets présents ont valeur de traces et deviennent allégories, symboles ou sources de fictions.

Valérie Leray, born in 1975, lives and works in Berlin. she was graduated in Master in Photography and Multimedia in the Paris 8 University.
Her topic is the question of presence/absence of History in contemporary photography. In 2008, her project “Nomads” was awarded the label of “The European Year for Intercultural Dialog”. It was also granted a contribution by the Delegation of Foreign Affairs and a purchase by the Centre France Region (1% artistique).  In 2009, she received a support of the Direction of Cultural Affairs in Region Centre.
Her works was exhibited in different countries : Fotoseptiembre (Mexico D.F), Pyngyao International Photography festival, Paris, Berlin, Orléans.
Since 1999, Valérie Leray is the Artistic Director of la mire (ex Lumen) based in Orléans (FR), which aimed at promoting Visual Arts.
