Nobushige Kono

Nobushige Kono

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

Exhibition Aug 29 - 30, 2015
Opening: Sat, Aug 29, 6pm
Open on Sun, Aug 30 and Mon, Aug 31
(3-7pm)

Nobushige Kono's practice has mainly been focused on exploring the situation of images in the digital age, with careful consideration to how images are produced, distributed and perceived. The world of today is imbued with images. So it might be impossible to understand reality without thinking about images. But it is also clear that the images we have are already edited and altered in many cases. Therefore, it is crucial for him to find a way of dealing with postproduction itself through his own practice. In this context, found materials have a vital role, because they can be recycled through his own postproduction process to deconstruct their original functions, attempting to probe the conditions from another perspective.

St. & St. - at short notice

St. & St. - at short notice

opening: friday, august 21st
19:00 - 22:00

open on
saturday and sunday, august 22nd and 23rd
15:00 - 18:00

*** english ***

Does our expected speed in processing information correspond with our abilities? Do we succeed in reflecting the perceived in a world of swiftly exchanged news? How do we decide which content is of importance? Are we still in possession of control or have we already arranged ourselves within the loss of control?

With their 2-room-installation „at short notice“ St. & St. relate to the constant accelerated information society and the consequent repercussions towards our perception.

An Irritation of Spirit

Once upon a time I entered in a cave. There, some multi-layered portions of space were encountering flat surfaces.

I saw pieces of bodies, bits of walls, sections of plane colors, smooth fading members, shiny chromatic organs, worm-like faces, jumping elements, lions, hearts, fingers, plants, separated components, married substances, crying children, clothes, mixed grounds, waves.

Flat Man, a.k.a Devil Doll, a.k.a Slutty Penis-Drama king of Heart-Baby Face Killer, likes to use the word ambivalence. Or ambivalent.
I think it s a word to make sense out of our general and inevitable confusion, in the perceptions we have from the world. (Generally words do)

He brings together an image, in a dissected image.
As function body and brain, as eye and hand... Well yes: it s a painting.

The color shifts here, the subject is stuck there. And over here, and there, an alive-eye in a tinted-block does not move of an inch.
Later, there will be blood. Later, there will be love.
The symbols appear just like the faces, stage after stage, layer after layer: mazed. It s a puzzle.

Representing pieces of the world, maybe as a cohabitation of worlds.
Find an impossible harmony.
Is it faith? Is it magic? Hope is magic and magic is faith, and so because faith is hope, no surprise that the snake eats his tale and the cat licks his ass.

I mean, You can't grasp the world in an image, but intricate some ambivalent elements, like catching a fish with a worm..?
Peut être.

facebook girls

vernissage: 4th oct. 2013 - 6pm

This work deals with notions of normative beauty and the normalization of the criteria for seduction established in popular culture. The portraits’ models come from Facebook profile pictures, selected for their composition. This series tells a story of the search for ideal and perfection, which, irreparably, ends in failure. By a certain way, one can say that the medium gives back individuality and originality to the models who, thanks to their re-found imperfections, become again more human instead of being simple replicas. To summarize my way of thinking, I would say that this work calls into question our perception of the canon of feminine beauty by disturbing the stereotypical images which are ones which, originally, perpetuate this quest for perfection and normalization.

"Somewhere in-between an exhibition and a music performance, this evening we are moving through a world of islands. Based on Alfred Schnittke's "Requiem" and Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" through Austronesia and other areas of research, we are stranding at geographical, physical and mental borders and barriers. Yearning for afterlife, in permanent movement, driven by order. A tramp. Passing islands or diving into. Settlement or escape are totally facultative. We try to follow the trace of Austronesia, passing on from its supposedly origin "Taiwan", through beetle's eye, to crawl out of the puzzle.”
